List: Osinbajo tells acting IGP Alkali 5 things to prioritise as he takes over from Adamu

The acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali, has officially assumed office following the handover by the immediate IGP Mohammed Adamu on Wednesday, April 7.

While decorating Alkali for the new position, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Wednesday instructed him on the areas he should focus on as he resumes duty.

Legit.ng lists the things the vice president advised the new police chief to focus on, according to a report by Premium Times:

1. Rebuild broken bridges of trust

Osinbajo asked the police chief to ensure that under his watch, the police rebuild the broken bridges of trust to the public and regain the confidence of the citizenry.

He said one of the ways to achieve this is to implement the community policing policy.

2. Compliance with the rule of law

The vice president also charged Alkali to ensure the force live up to all of the highest standards of professional conduct and compliance with the rule of law.

3. Officers’ welfare

He also told the new police chief to ensure his leadership significantly improve the welfare and working conditions of officers.

4. Scaling up capacities

Osinbajo said Alkali should work towards rapidly scaling up the police’ forensic, logistical, logistical and operational capacities.

5. Stamp out excesses and abuses

To be able to address the nation’s current challenges, Osinbajo said Alkali must stamp out the excesses and abuses and the culture of impunity, demonstrated by some elements of the force which provoke public outrage against the institution.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Osinbajo said President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Alkali as the acting IGP because he is the most senior among those qualified to hold the position.

The vice president also noted that the process of appointing Alkali was a departure from the past when the selection of the new IGP often meant the immediate retirement of a cohort of senior police officers whose vast experience and training would no longer be available to the country.

He further said Alkali will have access to many experienced senior officers to work with in his new role as the nation’s police chief.
