2023: This is our position on Tinubu, Fayemi, others succeeding Buhari – Prominent northern forum

– ACF said it has no problem with southerners occupying the biggest office in the country come 2023

– The forum, speaking through his spokesperson Emmanuel Yawe, described the impression that northerners will not back southerners as wrong

– ACF, however, said it will not support any political candidate and party in order to avoid “disharmony”

With the conversation of the 2023 presidency getting prominent mentions across regional and political belts, Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) said it has no problem with power returning to the southern region.

Speaking with The Punch, ACF’s national publicity secretary, Emmanuel Yawe, made the position of the forum known, saying north is ready to support southerners succeed President Muhammadu Buhari.

ACF, however, said that it will not interfere in a matter that has to do with political parties or support a particular zone or candidate for the presidency in 2023.

The forum described as wrong the impression that northerners will never back a candidate from the southern part of the country.

It further emphasised that “discriminating or identifying with candidates” will cause disunity in the forum, saying the selection of candidates is a matter of political parties.

“The ACF has no objection to a southerner becoming the president of Nigeria. In 1999, it was the northerners that promoted and voted for Olusegun Obasanjo as president.

“What the ACF will not do is to dabble into a matter that has been reserved for political parties to handle by the 1999 Constitution.

“We cannot, in the circumstances, support a particular zone or a particular candidate for presidency or any other office. And as we have said before, the ACF welcomes northerners of all political persuasion and identity.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that Karounwi Oladapo, southwest All Progressives Congress (APC) caretaker zonal publicity secretary stated that Governor Kayode Fayemi is hugely favoured in line to take over from President Buhari.

Oladapo, who is a former deputy speaker of Ekiti state stated that although APC national leader Asiwaji Bola Tinubu has paid his dues, “Fayemi is a Christian from the South and the crown fits him.”

The former lawmaker attributed the submission to age and faith factor, adding that by 2023 when Buhari’s tenure will dive down, Tinubu would have been “above 70 years of age.”
