A report by The Nation reaffirmed that the popular instant messaging app, WhatsApp would stop working for some iPhones as well as Android smartphones starting January 1, 2021.

Legit.ng gathered that there are several Android and iOS phones that may not be able to run the app as the company would withdraw support for older versions of OS from next year.

The information on the WhatsApp FAQ section, WhatsApp would only be compatible with phones running the Android 4.0.3 operating system or newer as well as iPhones running on iOS 9 and newer.

The report emphasised that all iPhone models up to the iPhone 4 will lose support for the messaging platform in the next few days, adding that the iPhone models include the iPhone 4S, the iPhone 5, the iPhone 5S, the iPhone 6, and the iPhone 6S.

It further stated that for Android, devices including HTC Desire, Motorola Droid Razr, LG Optimus Black, and the Samsung Galaxy S2 will lose WhatsApp support as 2020 ends.

The report noted that WhatsApp would keep the app running for select phones with KaiOS 2.5.1 OS or newer, including JioPhone and JioPhone 2.

Based on the report, the following phones would lose WhatsApp support from January 1, 2021:

1. Apple iPhone 1-4

2. Samsung Galaxy S2

3. HTC Desire

4. LG Optimus Black

5. Motorola Droid Razr

6. Any Android released before 2010

However, the following phones would need to update to at least iOS 9 or Android OS 4.0.3:

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that millions of people across the world may lose the opportunity to use the popular instant messaging app, WhatsApp, as the mobile app manufacturers said it would cease to work on older devices, starting from Friday, January 1.

It was reported that those whose devices have iOS 9 or Android 4.0.3 or above before January 1 would be safe and continue to have access to the app.
